SUMMARY:Grief Support Group
DESCRIPTION:Second Thursday of the Month @ 6pm \nWhether you are new to grief and loss or have been dealing with it for a while\, we are here to help. This support group is for adults who have experienced the loss of someone through death\, regardless of when or what your relationship is to that person. \nMeet the leader of this group: \nAloha! My name is Leah Ledward and I am the Bereavement Coordinator with North Hawaii Hospice. I am new to the company having just started in December 2019. Prior to that\, I was a Grief Counselor with Hospice of Kona for a year and a half. Since the transition I have absolutely loved living and working right here in Waimea! I graduated from the University of Hawaii at Hilo with a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology with a clinical focus in May 2017\, and just recently obtained my license and am now a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). Right out of school I did intensive in-home family crisis work with Catholic Charities and Hawaii Behavioral Health. I have had tons of experience working with both children and adults and really enjoy helping people. I have 3 children and 2 cats and when I am not working\, I enjoy spending time with my family and going to the beach.  \nContact Leah with any questions about the group at leah@northhawaiihospice.com or 808-930-6634

SUMMARY:Let’s Talk Story About Wishes for Care at the End of Life
DESCRIPTION:Face it: this is a conversation people don’t want to have. It’s a taboo subject. It’s a discussion many put off for too long. \nJeannette Koijane\, of Kōkua Mau\, will be our expert speaker to lead this discussion at the Life & Death Wellness Center. Kōkua Mau\, Hawaii’s go-to source for information on hospice and palliative care\, has launched a new program to help communities in starting to have those difficult discussions. (Kōkua Mau means ‘Continuous Care‘ in Hawaiian.) Its goal is to help individuals and families understand decisions they may need to make\, and to find resources and information in our community for talking about their wishes for the care they want at the end of life. Learn how to talk with your loved ones about what matters most to you. Share with your doctor about the kind of care you want to receive. You’ll feel more confident and ready for the future.

SUMMARY:End-Of-Life Care Options in Hawai'i -- Creating a Heart Will
DESCRIPTION:Hawai‘i is the 7th U.S. jurisdiction to have a death with dignity statute. The “Our Care\, Our Choice” act went into effect on January 1\, 2019. The law allows qualified\, terminally ill adult residents of Hawaii who are mentally competent and within 6 months of death to legally obtain a prescription medication to hasten the end of their life. Many patients and physicians still have questions and concerns. \nDr. Charfen will provide a safe and open forum to learn more about Medical Aid in Dying and other end-of-life care options in a non-judgmental setting at the LDW Center. \nIn the spirit of love\, Bobbi Bryant will then lead us in writing through the voice of the heart. Sharing a heart will or love letter with those you leave behind can be one of the most cherished gifts you give. Bobbi will teach us how this simple act can bring incredible love into your life and to those you love. \nThe event is free\, but please RSVP as space is limited. Donations are accepted\, and are used to fund the center and to help our local community members in need.

SUMMARY:Home Burial Documentary & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:We will be showing inspiring films about Home Funerals. You will learn how the growing home funeral movement is changing how we care for our loved ones at the time of death. And\, how participation in this beautiful and ancient ritual helps to provide deep healing and connection for those who love and care for them. \n“Despite the rise in professional death care\, it is and has always been legal in every state for families to care for their own loved ones at home from death to final disposition. Until the Civil War\, funerals were family\, church\, and community affairs. The family washed and laid out the body\, dressed or draped it\, often with the help of a birth midwife and church members. Today there is renewed interest in reclaiming this right and privilege in ways that bring meaning and comfort to all. Families choosing home funerals express gratitude for the intimacy\, connection\, and sense of purpose that results from this organic and timeless practice. Taking the time out of our busy schedules to truly tend to the lives of those around us and be present to the loss begins the journey to healing.” —www.homefuneralalliance.org

SUMMARY:Death Over Dinner & Dessert: A Celebration of Our Ancestors\, Honoring the Day of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:This is our favorite time of year at the Life & Death Wellness center in Kapa’au\, Hawaii. Not only because this year it’s our grand opening for the public\, but it is also a time that many cultures honor their dead with celebration\, stories\, and food! We have chosen the Day of the Dead holiday to invite you to an event called Death over Dinner and Dessert. \nOur event will begin at a local favorite restaurant\, Minnie’s\, which is adjacent to our center. Dinner will be a catered\, sit-down event. We encourage you to BYOA or Bring Your Own Ancestor. You can’t really embrace the day if you don’t escort your dead. Please make sure to bring a small photograph or a symbol of your loved one so that we may all honor the gift that was their life during dinner and with a special ceremony over dessert. \nCome talk story about your ancestors and learn more about how people around the world take care of their dying and honor the dead\, while we feed our souls and stomachs with Minnie’s specially prepared delicacies. \nOne week prior to the event\, you will receive an email with links to interesting and sometimes bizarre cultural practices around death. These are meant to be conversation pieces and not a test\, so relax and come enjoy this unique celebration with us. \nAfter dinner\, we will walk about five steps away to our newly-opened Life & Death Wellness center and eat dessert\, while we ceremonially honor our departed. We invite you to tell their stories — especially the touching\, funny ones. Write your bucket list wishes on our walls. And most importantly\, enjoy dessert and celebrate life! \nCost: $35 (plus tax) and all proceeds go to funding community events at our Life & Death Wellness center. \nDinner includes salad\, dinner rolls\, your choice of local freshly-caught fish or vegetarian option\, along with a side of mash and vegetables. Dessert is a surprise! \nPlease make us aware of any food allergies. \nDeath Over Dinner is an actual global movement that was initiated to get people to at least begin the conversation about death in a safe environment such as the dinner table. The dinner table is the most forgiving place for difficult conversation and the ritual of breaking bread together creates warmth and connection. We love this concept and the nonprofit that started it and encourage you to check them out at www.deathoverdinner.org. \nGet tickets HERE!
